SUMMER PLUMBING PROBLEMS

As the seasons change, so does the way you use your plumbing. Summer brings a unique set of plumbing problems that are essential for preparing and fighting. The  Philadelphia Plumbing team has assembled this list of common summer plumbing problems homeowners should know. Read on to learn more.

5 COMMON PLUMBING PROBLEMS

1. Disposal clogged

Summer is for grilling, block parties, and fresh summer fruit and vegetables. However, more guests in the house and more material that goes into disposal could lead to major problems. Corn cobs, cantaloupe rinds, fruit kernels, and meat fat will block your disposal. If you fear a backup, run cold water for a few seconds before and after using the garbage disposal.

2. Clogged toilets

School is over for the summer, which means your kids (and their friends) will be using the bathrooms in your home for bathroom breaks. The added rinses will increase wear on flappers, chains, and handles, potentially forcing you to do a plumbing repair sooner than expected.

3. Problems with sprinklers

Underground irrigation systems are particularly vulnerable during the summer. Increased foot traffic on the lawn threatens sprinkler heads. A misplaced foot could break your head and cause a water leak. A leaking sprinkler is often difficult to detect because sprinkler heads are designed to spray water. But the problem will eventually become evident on your water bill. Leaking sprinklers will increase your water consumption and increase your bill.

4. Slow-draining showers

Going on a trip to the sea? Make sure you rinse off before taking a shower. Sand, dirt, and small bits of beach debris are the common culprits of slow-draining showers. However, if your shower drains slowly, don't look for chemicals to remove the clogs - these only delays the problem and increase the wear on the hoses. Instead, try meandering your clogged drain. Alternatively, call an emergency plumber.

5. Overloaded washing machines

Vacations, pool rides, outdoor walks, and other outdoor activities will add to the work of your washing machine. Excessive use and overloading of the machine can cause leakage in the hose. A pipe leak will not only increase your water bill, but it can also flood your home! Fortunately, a hose leak in a washing machine is easy to fix, you can do it yourself in about five minutes.
